How to use the filet crochet pattern generator

To make a filet crochet pattern from a picture, upload it, set the width in squares (30–60 is typical) and the generator splits it into filled blocks and open spaces. Follow the chart or the written rows — “Row 5: 3 spaces, 4 blocks, 3 spaces” — starting from the chain count shown.

  1. 1

    Upload a picture

High-contrast pictures work best: silhouettes, letters, flowers, animals.

  2. 2

    Set the width

30–40 squares for a doily or panel, 60–80 for curtains and table runners.

  3. 3

    Check the blocks

Dark areas become filled blocks, light areas open spaces. Clean up tidies single squares.

  4. 4

    Crochet row by row

Chain the starting length, then follow the written rows and tick each one off.

How filet crochet charts work

Filet crochet is worked in thread as a mesh of double crochet posts and chain spaces. On the chart, a filled square is a block (3 dc) and an empty square is a space (dc, ch 2).

Because filet has only two “colors” — filled and open — the generator turns your picture into a two-tone mesh. Pictures with a strong outline read best.

Starting chain and size

A filet chart W squares wide needs about W × 3 + 1 chains plus the turning chain. Finished size depends on your thread and hook: in size 10 cotton one square is roughly 1 cm, so a 40-square panel is about 40 cm wide.
