10 /Quick answer
To make a needlepoint pattern from a photo, upload it, pick your canvas mesh (10, 13 or 18 holes per inch) and finished size, and export the chart. Finished size equals stitches divided by mesh, so a 104-stitch-wide chart on 13 mesh is 8 inches wide.
Houses, pets and flowers with clear color areas chart well.
13 mesh is the classic; 18 mesh shows more detail, 10 mesh stitches faster.
15–25 colors usually give a rich but stitchable chart.
Symbols, a thread key and finished size — ready for tent stitch.

A charted design is stitched by counting from the chart onto blank canvas; a painted canvas has the colors printed on. Our chart works for counted needlepoint and as a guide for painting your own canvas.

Needlepoint is stitched on stiff open-mesh canvas with half stitches (tent stitch) that cover every hole, usually in wool. Cross stitch is made of X-shaped stitches on soft Aida or linen, usually in cotton floss, and the background is often left bare.
Both are counted from the same kind of grid chart, so any pattern here can be stitched either way — only the stitch and the finished size change.
| Needlepoint | Cross stitch | |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | Mesh canvas (10, 13, 18 holes per inch) | Aida or evenweave (11–18 count) |
| Stitch | Tent stitch (half cross), every hole | Full X stitch |
| Thread | Wool, cotton or silk | Stranded cotton floss |
| Background | Usually fully stitched | Often left unstitched |
| Typical uses | Pillows, stockings, belts, ornaments | Framed pictures, samplers, cards |

To get a custom needlepoint canvas, chart your photo here at the mesh you want, then stitch it from the chart on blank canvas or send the color chart to a print shop that prints onto needlepoint canvas. Pillows, Christmas stockings and belts are the most popular projects — set the size first so the stitch count fits.
90 /FAQ
Upload the photo, pick 10, 13 or 18 mesh and a finished size, choose the number of colors and export the chart with a thread key.
Divide the stitch count by the mesh: 104 stitches on 13 mesh is 8 inches; on 18 mesh it is about 5.8 inches.
Needlepoint uses half stitches that cover stiff mesh canvas, usually in wool; cross stitch uses X stitches on soft Aida in cotton floss and often leaves the background bare. Both follow the same grid charts.
Colors are matched to DMC stranded cotton; you can switch to Anchor. For wool, use the chart colors as a guide to the nearest shade.
