15 /The sampler tradition

Alphabets have been stitched this way for 250 years

Girls once proved their skill by stitching every letter on a sampler. The grid is the same today: one square, one cross.

Spacing letters and lines

Leave one empty square between letters and three between lines. For a name under a picture, center it under the design and leave at least five rows of space.

Add a name to a photo pattern

Make a pet portrait or wedding pattern from a photo, then add the name and date as a band underneath. Leave enough rows: the Classic font needs 7 rows plus spacing.

Cross stitch letter questions

Q.01How do I cross stitch letters?

Follow a letter chart square by square: each filled square is one full cross. Start in the center of the word, leave one square between letters and three between lines, and use two strands of floss on 14 count Aida.

Q.02How big are cross stitch letters on 14 count?

The Classic font is 7 stitches tall, so letters are half an inch high on 14 count. The Large font is 14 stitches, about 1 inch.

Q.03Is there a free cross stitch alphabet chart?

Yes. The full A–Z and 0–9 chart on this page is free to download as a PDF in all three fonts.

Q.04Can I add a name to a cross stitch pattern?

Yes. Make the name here, note its stitch count, and leave that many free squares below the picture in your pattern — or stitch it as a separate band.

Q.05Which thread color should I use for letters?

High contrast reads best: DMC 310 black or 321 red on white Aida, or 3865 winter white on dark fabric.
