How to use the knitting chart generator

To make a knitting chart from a picture, upload it, set the width in stitches, choose 2–6 colors and read the chart right to left on right-side rows. For fair isle we flag every run longer than 5 stitches, where the float behind needs catching.

  1. 1

    Upload a picture

Bold, simple motifs knit up best in colorwork.

  2. 2

    Set stitches wide

Match the motif to your project: a hat band, a sweater yoke or a pillow front.

  3. 3

    Choose 2–6 colors

Fair isle uses 2 colors per row; intarsia can use more.

  4. 4

    Check the floats

Runs longer than 5 stitches are listed so you can catch the floats or switch to intarsia.

Fair isle, intarsia or duplicate stitch?

  • ✕Fair isle: two colors per row, the unused one floats behind. Keep floats to 5 stitches or catch them.
  • ✕Intarsia: big blocks of color, each with its own bobbin — no floats.
  • ✕Duplicate stitch: embroider the chart on top of finished stockinette.

Gauge and chart proportions

Knit stitches are wider than they are tall (a common gauge is 20 stitches × 28 rows per 4 in), so a square chart knits up shorter. Swatch first and adjust the row count if proportions matter.

Knitting graph paper

Knitting graph paper uses rectangles instead of squares so the chart looks like the knitted fabric. Use the chart here as your graph — the Color view shows the grid with a bold line every 10 stitches — or draw freehand designs on the pixel art grid and open them here.

Questions people ask

Q.01How do I make a fair isle chart from a picture?

Upload the picture, keep it to two colors per row and check the float list — runs over 5 stitches need catching on the wrong side.

Q.02How do I read a knitting chart?

Read right-side rows from right to left and wrong-side rows from left to right, starting at the bottom.

Q.03Why does my chart look squashed when knitted?

Knit stitches are wider than tall. Swatch, measure stitches and rows per inch, and add rows to keep the picture’s proportions.
